Our ground beef cheesesteak has all the flavors of a classic Philly cheesesteak, juicy beef, melty cheese, soft hoagie rolls, and an irresistible bite!

Growing up in New Jersey, I’ve been lucky to live within driving distance of both New York and Philly. Nothing beats a NY slice of pizza, and of course, a Philly cheesesteak, right?
I’m not a fan of the cheesesteaks that use those thin, processed steak-style meats like Steak-umm. That meat makes me sick for at least a day.
I prefer real, flavorful meat. And honestly, New Jersey has some pretty incredible cheesesteaks, maybe even better than Philly’s in some spots!
That brings me to my ground beef cheesesteaks. They’re packed with flavor and, dare I say, better than a lot of what we’ve tried in both Philly and Jersey.
If you’re into easy ground beef recipes, affordable meal options, and quick weeknight dinners that the whole family will love, this is a must-try!
Ground Beef Cheesesteak Ingredients
- Ground beef (80-85% lean): Using a less lean ground beef will give you that rich, beefy flavor. It’s a bit indulgent and yes, a little greasy, but that’s what makes it so satisfying. The fat adds flavor and keeps the filling moist. There’s a reason a Philly cheesesteak is so good, fat is flavor!
- Kosher salt: Brings out the natural taste of the beef and balances the richness.
- Black pepper: Adds a bit of flavor and enhances the overall flavors.
- Granulated garlic: We find that this adds a beautiful taste to the dish, if you want, you can omit, but we highly recommend it.
- Dried parsley: Adds a subtle freshness and color, optional.
- Shredded cheese (mozzarella, provolone, American, or cheddar): Use a shredded cheese without anti-caking agents. You can also use slices. For dairy free, we recommend using Follow Your Heart Shredded Mozzarella or even their provolone slices.
- Hoagie rolls (Amoroso rolls preferred): Soft, sturdy, and slightly chewy, these rolls are perfect for soaking up the flavorful grease without falling apart.
- Banana peppers (optional): If you want to cut through the richness, these add a tangy, spicy bite.
How to Make Ground Beef Cheesesteak
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat the oil until skillet is hot. Then add the ground beef.
As it cooks, season the beef with kosher salt, black pepper, granulated garlic, and dried parsley. Let it cook, breaking it up with a masher or fork as it browns.
Don’t drain the fat, as it adds flavor and juiciness, cook it back into the meat.
Turn the heat down and stir in the shredded cheese. Watch as it melts into the beef, creating a creamy, cheesy mixture.
Scoop the filling into the hoagie rolls, letting the juices soak into the bread.
Serve hot, and if you’re feeling bold, top it off with some banana peppers to add a bright, tangy contrast.
Roll up your cheesesteaks!
For an extra authentic touch and easier handling, try rolling your ground beef cheesesteaks in parchment paper before serving. This helps keep everything together, locks in the heat, and gives you that classic cheesesteak feel. Plus, it makes cleanup a breeze!
Cut a piece of parchment paper slightly larger than your hoagie roll.
Place the filled hoagie on the parchment and roll it up snugly.
Unwrap the cheesesteak and transfer it to a plate for serving.
Recipe notes and alterations
- Prep-ahead: You can make the ground beef ahead of time and then reheat the meat and melt in the cheese before serving.
- Grease: If you want to dial back the greasiness without losing flavor, you can drain a little fat before adding the cheese, but leave enough to keep the cheesesteak moist and juicy.
- Cheese: We recommend mozzarella, provolone or American cheese. If you’re using shredded cheese we recommend using one without an anti-caking agent.
- Leftovers: Store the beef mixture in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. When reheating, warm it in a skillet or the microwave.
- Toppings: We love banana peppers and the kids love fries! You can also do peppers and onions, mushrooms, it’s all what you prefer! Some even enjoy a cheesesteak hoagie!
