These Gender reveal cupcakes are a deliciously creative way to share the joy of a new baby and of course the baby’s gender! It’s perfect for your gender reveal party with family and friends.
We love the hidden color inside of the cupcake and then always top with a mixture of pink and blue sprinkles on the outside. When everyone bites into the cupcake they’ll see the baby’s gender, pink for girl and blue for boy!

- All-Purpose Flour: You can also use cup 4 cup gluten free as well.

- Butter: The base of the buttercream, providing a rich flavor and creamy texture. We use Country Crock Plant Butter for dairy free.

- Milk: Adjusts the consistency of the buttercream, making it more spreadable or easier to pipe.
- Vanilla Extract: Adds flavor to the buttercream.
- Food Dye (blue or pink): Colors the buttercream for decorative purposes.
- Sprinkles (optional): Adds a colorful and festive decoration to the cupcakes.
How to make gender reveal cupcakes
- Prep: Preheat oven to 350°F. Line muffin tin with liners.
- Curdle Milk: Mix milk and vinegar; let sit 5 mins.
- Dry Mix: Whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, salt.
- Wet Mix: Combine oil, vanilla, eggs with milk mixture.
- Combine: Mix wet into dry ingredients.
- Bake: Fill liners 3/4 full. Bake 20-22 mins.

Depending on the location, we typically use a reusable container, but if it’s somewhere you’re dropping off we recommend a disposable container like this.
Can I make the buttercream in advance?
Yes, you can prepare the buttercream up to 3 days in advance. Just store it in the refrigerator in an airtight container. Before you need to pipe onto the cupcakes you’ll need to let it come to room temperature and then rewhip it for the best consistency.

Vanilla Cupcakes
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1 tablespoon vinegar
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup safflower oil or vegetable oil, melted butter
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 2 large eggs
Buttercream
- 1 1/2 cups butter 2 sticks
- 4 1/2-5 cups powdered sugar
- 3-4 tablespoons milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- food dye blue or pink
- sprinkles optional
Instructions
Cupcake Recipe
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
- Combine the milk with vinegar and allow to sit for 5 minutes to allow the milk to curdle.
- Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl. This is to remove any clumps.
- Pour the oil, vanilla, and eggs into the milk mixture, and then add to the dry ingredients in the large bowl. Mix until combined.
- Fill the muffin liners 3/4 of the way full and then bake for 20-22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Carefully remove the cupcakes from the oven and allow to cook 2-3 minutes before handling. Transfer the cupcakes to a cooling rack to continue to cool.
Buttercream Recipe
- Beat the butter until nice and fluffy, and add in the powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk. Add more milk if the buttercream is too thick or more powdered sugar if the buttercream is too thin. If you’re not using salted butter (most vegan butter is salted), you can add 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
- Add about 1 1/2 cups of the buttercream to a bowl and add in a drop of pink or blue food dye, mix until combined. Add to a piping bag and set aside.
- Scoop a hole in the cupcakes and then pipe in the colored buttercream.
- Top with buttercream using an icing spatula (carefully not to mix the icing) or use a piping bag with your desired tip. Decorate with your favorite sprinkles.
